The Quest for Freedom and Dignity by Vishal Mangalwadi

The unique aspect of this book is that the author is Indian. He therefore sheds light on Christianity that an American could not. He takes the American out of American Christianity. This separating of Christianity from the American culture was revolutionary for me. The only view I have ever had has been from inside my American culture. Christ is Christ to everyone and anyone who is willing to believe. While the evils of India are much different looking than the evils of America, we both have the same need of Jesus Christ. Truth is truth no matter where you are from.

Chandra, it is so true and refreshing to come to understand Christianity more and more apart from it's American context. When Scott and i were in India it seemed as if some of the believer's sin was so apparent, and yet they also had different facades than we in America would choose. They have such a different set of morals and beliefs in what is important and different ideals. When you step completely out of the American context you can see things more clearly against the backdrop of something unfamiliar. Vishal especially has so much credibility to me, because as he has shared w/ us at the Theota's house, he has been thrown in jail at least once for his faith and convictions. He knows how to take the Indian out of Indian Christianity and make it genuinely just Christ-centered. I look forward to understanding this for myself more and more. Thanks for your thoughts on this book Chandra.
